history

Cardiff City are the most important Welsh football team.  There can be no doubt about that.  Currently, Swansea and Wrexham lie in Division three, leaving the Bluebirds to fly the Welsh flag alone in the Second Division.

Formed in 1899 as Riverside F.C. Cardiff City are the only side ever to take the F.A. Cup outside of England when they were victorious over Arsenal at Wembley in a memorable game back in 1927. They were also agonizingly close to winning the League outright in 1923, only a missed penalty in their final game cost them the championship by 0.024 of a goal.

In 1970 Cardiff reached the Cup Winners Cup Quarter-Final. Playing the mighty Real Madrid, who lost 1-0 at Ninian Park before the Spanish Side won the return leg 2-0 in the Bernebau Stadium Spain. Of the latter years Cardiff have massively underachieved for a side of their size and potential. Most of their football has been played in the lower divisions and they have consistently been a selling club. Now with Sam Hamman at the helm, and regular spending on players and facilities the Premier League surely can't be too far away. The catchment area and a superb 2nd division side already regularly achieves attendances of 15,000.  Who knows what the future holds?  Mystic Meg perhaps.
